Most heating issues on the G70 come down to one of a few common, fixable causes — here's what to check.
Why this happens
Like the rest of the Grainfather range, the G70 has built-in safety protection to stop the heating element from overheating or running dry. If something trips that protection, the element will stop heating — which can look like a fault, but is often just the system doing its job.
Step 1: Check your water level
A low water level is one of the most common causes of a heating cut-out on any Grainfather boiler. Make sure you're within the correct minimum fill level for your G70 before troubleshooting further.
Step 2: Check the base for residue
Proteins and nutrients left on the heating element from previous brews can create hot spots. These hot spots can cause the element to overheat and trip the safety protection, even with the water level otherwise fine.
To fix it: give the base and element a thorough clean, making sure nothing is stuck to the surface, then try again.
To prevent it: lightly scrape the element with your brewing paddle every now and then during the boil, so proteins don't have a chance to build up in the first place.
Step 3: Check your altitude settings (for a related overheating alert)
If you're getting an overheating alert rather than the element simply not heating, this is often caused by elevation. At higher altitudes, water boils at a lower temperature — for every 150m (492ft) of elevation, the boiling point drops by roughly 0.5°C (32.9°F). If your Boil temperature setting doesn't account for this, the G70 can flag it as an alert.
To adjust it:
On the controller:
- Go to Menu
- Select Settings
- Adjust the Boil temperature
On the App:
- Go to Preferences
- Modify the Boil temperature
Still not heating?
If you've checked the water level, cleaned the base thoroughly, and adjusted your boil temperature settings where relevant — and your G70 is still not heating — this points to something that needs a closer look, such as the heating element or thermal fuse itself.
