Calculating Water Hardness from your Municipal Water Supply Report
Water Supply Reports that offer the specific details regarding the water supply, may use different words and values to present the specifics about your water supply.
When referring to water hardness, here is how to find and calculate water hardness, should it not be given in the same values as needed for creating a Water Profile in the Grainfather App:
- Firstly, if your water report does not specifiy 'Water Hardness', this value may be listed as CaCO3 . As the amount of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in water is indicative of the Water Hardness, some reports may simply offer this value in terms of CaCO3 .
- Secondly, the units needed for data entry in the Water Profile is PPM (parts per million) - not all reports use this value in their reporting, and some calculations for unit conversion may be required:
- If Water Hardness/CaCO3 is reported as mg/L, this is directly equivalent to PPM.
- If Water Hardness/CaCO3 is not reported in this way, you can calculate hardness by adding meq/L (milliequivalents/L) of Ca and Mg, then multiplying that value by 50.
